As leading service provider in Europe, our customer was enabling a software defined and virtualized WAN as the first step towards their digital transformation roadmap. The strategy was to quickly roll-out SDWAN services to their enterprise customers. An SDWAN solution offered by a top global OEM was chosen that can deliver multiple business services like site to site VPN, Firewall and Security, IP address management, site to datacenter services to start with.
The customer wanted to minimize the number of user identified issues for the best customer experience by validating the solution before deployment. But the infrastructure needs specifically for the crucial scalability tests demanded huge capital expenditure specifically for the customer edge devices. Also, the service provider wanted an independent test vendor who can do pre-deployment validation in a lab environment to benchmark the functional and performance characteristics of different services.
Tata Elxsi Solution
Tata Elxsi was chosen as the best partner due to the expertise showcased by Tata Elxsi SDN NFV architects team during the initial workshops. Tata Elxsi built the test environment at customer premise in collaboration with the core engineering teams from both customer side and the OEM supplier side. By integrating the Tata Elxsi’s Test Automation Framework into the lab environment, different functional and performance test cases were automated.
Tata Elxsi also led our customer by suggesting a software defined simulation tool that would help validate scalability test cases before rolling out in the lab environment and prevent detection of issues in live network. Once the prototype was approved by the customer, Tata Elxsi took the complete ownership in building the SD-Simulation Tool and integrate into the test bed.
The cost efficient and highly scalable SD-simulation tool created by Tata Elxsi required only one Intel Neon processor 32 core, 128 GB RAM commercially available off-the-shelf hardware to simulate around 1200 endpoints. Around 400 new test cases were created for pre-deployment validation that is supported by Tata Elxsi’s SD-simulation tool that enabled large scale simulation of up to 6000 virtual endpoints.
The cost to validate scale capacity of the solution was around $750K. By investing in Tata Elxsi SD-simulation tool and 5 COTS platform totally costed only $250K to simulate 6000 endpoints. Tata Elxsi was able to save around $500K for our customer to enable the pre-deployment validation of complex scalability test cases. This approach helped unearth 14 hidden issues in the multiple endpoint scenarios, thereby improving the end user experience index considerably for our delighted customer.
