An end-to-end rapid prototype of 3D Android smartphone was developed for a Japanese OEM for quick evaluation of concept and functionality.
Tata Elxsi’s long standing customer, a multibillion dollar giant leading Mobile phone original equipment manufacturer had a problem at hand: Their innovative and challenging R&D concepts needed to be quickly proven for taking their next-gen phones into production. Tata Elxsi helped the customer by proving a complete smartphone that can be held in the hand and analyzed from multiple perspectives, from zero to completion in a period of 4 months. We continued to work with the customer on their other mobile product lines after successful delivery of the prototype.
Scope of Engagement
Tata Elxsi was assigned the task of building a smartphone with latest technologies in the market at that point in time - latest 3D display technology, 13 kinds of sensor interfaces including NFC, gyro, accelerometer, magnetic compass etc. The phone also included the DTV module interfaces to enable the users to watch Digital TV onto the phone.
Tata Elxsi’s customer, being in the consumer mobile handset space, where a high level of innovation and technology needs to be continuously tested and deployed in short periods of time, had a concept for a new design in place. To prove the concept in-house and take it forward to test feasibility of production, it was important to showcase proof of concept as close to the real product as possible.
Bringing in a unique blend of creativity on industrial design and near 2 decades of engineering experience under one roof - Tata Elxsi provided the perfect approach to prototyping, where the customer could realize the near-complete-product in a very short span of time, as opposed to working with several vendors for design, hardware, software and application customization. The services range from hardware design, software design, customizations, mechanical design and integration, industrial design, user-interface customization services as well as develop custom applications for the given product. Some of the challenges associated were in the technology itself to develop drivers for 3D display from scratch in such a short period of time.
Tata Elxsi can engage with customers in a variety of ways depending on project scope and timelines. A fixed-cost engagement in the rapid-product prototyping development helped the customer keep risks under control and balanced for delivering the project to the objectives.
Challenges: Vendor dependency management considering crucial timelines for delivery, Development of multiple new hardware drivers in very-short span of time, integration and product bring up within 2 weeks. Minute planning of managing external dependencies on component procurement, vendor management together with experience in all aspects of engineering was very crucial to the success of the project itself. More importantly, the right mix of skills had to be available on time throughout the project to deliver on time.
Tata Elxsi successfully delivered multiple product prototypes in a short-span of time by keeping the design life cycle within control.
