Tata Elxsi for Tata Steel wins the L&D Vision and Innovation Award 2021 for Tata Steel Safety Leadership Development Centre, Jamshedpur

Bangalore, December 20, 2021: Tata Elxsi and Tata Steel has jointly won the L&D Vision and Innovation Award 2021 for the ‘L&D Innovation in Training and Development Programme’ category for Tata Steel Safety Leadership Development Centre at Jamshedpur.

The Tata Steel Safety Leadership Development Centre is the state-of-the-art Digital Centre developed to impart safety training to officers, employees, and contract workers, aiming to develop safety skillsets required for plant and building safety competency and capability all along. The centre is equipped with the latest digital technology, including audio-visuals to complement safety instructions, crucial for every employee. Real-life like mannequins, various Personal Protective Equipment, and safety gears applicable for specific jobs and tasks are on display, with illustrative posters on safety.

Tata Steel has partnered with Tata Elxsi to implement the project. The scope of the project involved space and experience design, technology integration, immersive content development, project management, and fit-out execution.

The Tata Steel Safety Leadership Development Centre uses an experiential training platform to make the training engaging, increase knowledge retention and give practical exposure to the actual working environment in a safe way. In addition, to address language and comprehension barriers, multi-lingual and instructor-led training support was also incorporated. This was backed with an interactive test and assessment set-up to confirm understanding and knowledge absorption.

The Tata Steel Safety Leadership Development Centre was inaugurated by N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons, on March 2, 2020. As of date, over 27,000 people have successfully completed their safety training through this centre. Every year, about 45,000 people are expected to undergo experiential training, which would help Tata Steel achieve ‘Zero harm.’

Narendra Ghate – Chief Designer, Experience Design at Tata Elxsi, said, “We first tried to understand the different challenges faced by the Tata Steel team. Based on this, our multi-disciplinary team of experts consisting of researchers, instructional designers, content, and technology specialists came together to help translate Tata Steel’s vision to reality.

We are extremely delighted to be a part of this project and appreciate Tata Steel for their forward-thinking initiative to incorporate such an engaging safety leadership development centre. Tata Steel Safety Leadership Development Centre is indeed a benchmark for safety training. It will be increasingly more relevant, as companies are retooling/reskilling their workers and employees to improve safety and boost productivity.”
