A global leader in dispensing and technology solutions in the retail petroleum industry planned to expand its market share in the emerging markets like India and China. They approached Tata Elxsi to explore and understand the Indian fuel dispensing operations, seek consumer insights, perceptions and expectations from petrol dispensing units. The engagement also involved optimizing the current dispensing methods and exploring India-specific ideas and concepts for dispensing.
Tata Elxsi used a service design approach to study and understand the current fuel dispensing methods. An extensive research exercise was conducted across petrol pumps in urban and rural areas and highways aimed at understanding the overall ecosystem and the challenges from the point of views of both the petrol pump operator and the customers.
The result was a range of solutions, concepts and ideas for dispensing, service and user interaction across the different scenarios. Some of them were India specific, others global. Ideas were also categorized as incremental or optimized for existing interactions and disruptive or future-oriented.
